D1 Match of the Week: UCSD comes out victorious vs. Stanford in a five set battle

Number 14th ranked UC San Diego (12-4) flew up to take on 8th ranked Stanford (7-6) on Saturday, March 1st for KP’S NCAA D I Match of the Week. The epic five set battle saw 56 tie scores and 19 lead changes. UC San Diego came out on top (24-26, 25-22, 22-25, 25-22, 11-15).

For the match the Tritons hit .339 and senior Anthony Cherfan led the way with 18 kills, hitting .326, five blocks and recording two aces. Redshirt Junior Josh Schellinger contributed 15 kills and hit .281. “The match was very high-level volleyball in an exciting environment that let to lots of memorable moments on both sides. Overall, Stanford was a little better serving, but we were able make up for it with some timely plays for our block and defense. The deciding factors in each set was whichever team was better executing out of system and in transition,” said UC San Diego Head Coach Brad Rostratter.

For the fifth and decisive set the Tritons played very cleanly. They sided out at 91 percent, hit .647, had 11 kills and committed zero hitting errors. “In the fifth set, experience helps, and we have had it so far this season with a few five set battles. Setter, Bryce Dvorak has been in those situations more than most in his career. We always strive to play clean, and it was great to have that show up in those clutch moments,” said Coach Rostratter.

Theo Snoey showed up big time for the Cardinal. For the match Snoey hit .357 and had 22 kills. Others that recorded double digit kills for Stanford Moses Wagner (13) and Nate Clinton (12). Stanford out dug and provided good service pressure. The difference of the match that Stanford hit .254 and recorded 26 attacking errors, UCSD hit .339 and only recorded 15 hitting errors. In the key points of each set the Tritons made a few more plays to come out with the victory.
