International volleyball: Congliano, Scandicci advance; 33 kills for Galatasaray’s Eggleston

This is our weekly update on USA women playing professional volleyball around the world:

Italy

Conegliano and Scandicci both opened their best-of-three semifinal series with victories.

Conegliano beat Novara as Kathryn Plummer had 14 kills, hitting .565, and Kelsey Robinson Cook added 10 kills (.692) and an ace.

Scandicci swept rival Milano. Lindsey Ruddins came off the bench and had three kills. Haleigh Washington did not play. Dana Rettke appeared briefly as a sub for Milano but Kara Bajema did not play.

Avery Skinner’s and Chieri’s season ended in a four-set quarterfinal match to Novara. Skinner had 16 kills and a block, while Madi Kingdon Rushel had three kills and an ace.

Türkiye

The big line of the week was by Logan Eggleston, who had 33 kills, hitting .439, with two aces in a four-set win by Galatasaray over Nilufer. Her team will play for fifth place.

VakifBank was eliminated from title contention and will compete for third place after being swept by Eczacibasi. Chiaka Ogbogu had 10 kills (.714) and a block. Ali Frantti had six kills, while Jordan Thompson added three as a substitute.

Kuzeyboru will play Galatasaray for fifth place after beating Muratpasa in four sets. Sarah Parsons had 12 kills and an ace for Kuzeyboru, while Micaya White led Muratpasa with 12 kills and Stephanie Samedy added nine kills and an ace.

France

Nantes advanced to the semifinals with back-to-back sweeps of Marcq en Baroeul. Jaelyn Keene had seven kills (.600), three aces and two blocks in the first match and then seven kills and two aces in the second. Taylor Mims, who had 11 kills in the previous match, had 10, a block and an ace in the clincher. Tristin Savage had four aces, three kills, and three blocks for Marcq en Baroeul.

Nancy faces a fifth and deciding match after opening a two-game lead over the defending champions by beating Volero Le Cannet in four sets. Setter Saige Ka’aha’aina-Torres was named MVP after having four kills and an ace. Katelyn Evans was the top scorer with 19 kills, an ace and a block. Breana Runnels added 12 kills, a block an an ace. Haylie Bennett had nine kills and two blocks, while Shayla Hoeft added five kills, two block and an ace.

Volero Le Cannet then swept. Evans was Nancy’s top scorer with 10 kills, three blocks and an ace. Bennett had 10 kills, two blocks and an ace. Hoeft had five kills. Runnels scored on six kills and one block.

Volero Le Cannet forced another match by winning in five sets despite a big match from Evans, who had 24 kills, two aces and a block. Bennett had 17 kills, three blocks and an ace. Hoeft had nine kills, three blocks, and an ace and Runnels had eight kills and an ace. Ka’aha’aina-Torres had five kills and two blocks.

Mulhouse needed five sets to earn its spot in the semifinals by beating Beziers. Annayka Legros led with 14 kills and six blocks. Carli Snyder had 17 kills, a block and an ace. Jaali Winters added six kills and an ace. Clare Hoffman of Beziers led all scorers with 19 kills, three blocks and an ace. Serena Gray had six kills, two blocks and an ace and setter Ella May Powell added four kills.

Mulhouse swept the previous match as Snyder had 10 kills, two aces and a block. Jaali Winters had 11 kills (.688) and a block and Legros added seven kills, two blocks and one ace. Hoffman led Beziers with six kills, three blocks and two aces and Gray added five kills.

Germany

Defending-champion Stuttgart will face Schwerin in the finals as Potsdam finished the season in third place.

Potsdam lost its first semifinal match against Schwerin in four sets. Danielle Harbin led with 17 kills and a block. Breland Morrissette added four blocks, three kills and an ace. Justine Wong-Orantes was credited with 65% positive reception. Meg Wolowicz came off the bench for Schwerin and had four kills and three blocks.

Schwerin won again in four sets to win the best-of-three series. Harbin was top scorer again with 18 kills and one block. Morrissette had five kills and an ace. Wong-Orantes was credited with 40% positive reception.

Krystal Rivers powered Stuttgart past Dresdner in straight sets in their first match, getting 16 kills and two blocks. Grace Frohling led Dresdner with 12 kills. Tia Jimerson had five kills, two blocks, and one ace.

Rivers then had 18 kills (.607), two blocks and an ace in a sweep thate eliminated Dresdner. Jimerson led Dresdner with eight kills (.571) and a block. Frohling finished with five kills as a substitute.

Poland

Budowlani Lodz lost 2-0 in the semifinals after getting swept by Chemik Police and then losing in four.

In the first match Mac May led Lodz with 14 kills, a block and ace. In the second match of the best-of-three series, she had five kills and an ace in the first two sets. Budowlani will compete against Bielsko-Biala for third place.

Switzerland

NUC Viteos claimed the Swiss Cup title for the second year in a row by sweeping Lugano. Tia Scambray led with 17 kills (.762) and two aces. Tessa Grubbs added 12 kills, three aces and a block, Maddie Haynes added 10 kills, a block,and an ace, and Jasmine Gross had six kills and two blocks.
